Africa, a continent that produces the least amount of greenhouse gas emissions, suffers the most significant impacts of the climate crisis, from extreme weather conditions and natural disasters to a lack of food security. Set between the COP26 and COP27 climate conferences, Temperature Rising follows the lives of three climate activists as they tackle the climate crisis in Southern Africa, exposing the politics, barriers, and struggles activists face. Through the work of Ina Maria, a frontline activist against oil and gas exploration by Recon Africa in Namibia, Gabriel, who leads the fight against South Africa’s coal emissions, which remain one of the highest in the world, and Kumi, a human rights activist whose experience of the Durban floods motivates his environmental action, the film examines the issue of social and climate justice. Temperature Rising is a call to challenge climate leadership and legislation, while enabling community resistance, education, and global mobilisation.
