Plot Summary

Set within a fishing community on the South African West Coast, Of Bread and Water explores the daily life, work and relationships of a fisherman, Christian. Affectionately named Witbrood (White Bread), Christian, who has been a fisherman for more than 50 years, provides a deep and insightful glance at his daily life, exploring the labour-intensive practices of fishing and the exploitation of the industry itself. However, beyond the hardships of the seas, the film chronicles the chapters of his life, from meeting his beloved wife, Monica, at a game of dominoes, to adopting and raising a child from their neighbourhood as their daughter. Through the daily life and interactions between Witbrood and his family, Of Bread and Water creates an intimate and moving portrait of family, purpose, and joy against all odds.
